The Myth of FitzGerald- Lorentz Length Contraction and the Reality of Einstein’s Velocity Transformation

چکیده
The origin of the FitzGerald-Lorentz length contraction (FLC) hypothesis is discussed and attempts to verify it empirically are analyzed in detail. It is pointed out that the Lorentz transformation (LT) and the FLC not only rest on Einstein's two postulates of relativity, but also depend in a crucial way upon an additional assumption that was untested experimentally at the time. It is shown that replacing the latter assumption with another based on direct tests of the time-dilation phenomenon also explains the Michelson-Morley null result without invoking either the LT or the FLC but while still remaining consistent with the relativistic velocity transformation (VT). Moreover, an example is presented (" clock riddle ") which demonstrates a lack of internal consistency in the LT formulation of relativity theory. Finally, it is shown that all confirmed experimental results that have hitherto been ascribed to the LT can be predicted equally well on the basis of an alternative Lorentz transformation (ALT) that avoids the above inconsistency. This discovery leads to a restatement of the relativity principle (RP) which not only recognizes that physical laws are the same in all inertial systems but also that the units in which they are expressed may differ in a systematic manner from one rest frame to another as a consequence of acceleration.

Contradiction between FitzGerald-Lorentz Length Contraction and Time Dilation: A GPS-Compatible Lorentz Transformation
Recent work has shown that the underlying assumptions of the Global Positioning System (GPS) are incompatible with a number of conclusions of conventional relativity theory, including Fitzgerald-Lorentz length contraction (FLC) and the supposed ambiguity in the relative rates of clocks in motion. The challenge is therefore to amend relativity theory so as to bring it into full consistency with ...
متن کاملDiffusion of Selforganized Brownian Particles in the Michelson-Morley Experiment
The phenomenon of the constant light velocity could be explained classically using the concept of the diffusion of selforganized structures of Brownian particles. In this contribution the length of both arms of the Michelson-Morley instrument is constant. The Fitzgerald-Lorentz transformations were used to describe the contraction of the waves of Brownian particles (diffusion of waves in the di...
متن کاملFrom the Lorentz Transformation Group in Pseudo-Euclidean Spaces to Bi-gyrogroups
The Lorentz transformation of order $(m=1,n)$, $ninNb$, is the well-known Lorentz transformation of special relativity theory. It is a transformation of time-space coordinates of the pseudo-Euclidean space $Rb^{m=1,n}$ of one time dimension and $n$ space dimensions ($n=3$ in physical applications). A Lorentz transformation without rotations is called a {it boost}. Commonly, the ...
متن کاملThe origins of length contraction: I. The FitzGerald-Lorentz deformation hypothesis
One of the widespread confusions concerning the history of the 1887 MichelsonMorley experiment has to do with the initial explanation of this celebrated null result due independently to FitzGerald and Lorentz. In neither case was a strict, longitudinal length contraction hypothesis invoked, as is commonly supposed. Lorentz postulated, particularly in 1895, any one of a certain family of possibl...
متن کاملPoincaré’s Geometric Conventionalism and Relativity Principle: a physical perspective on GRT
Since Einstein’s 1916 development of gravitation it is considered a necessity that a theoretically consistent and experimentally accurate theory of gravitation requires the intrinsic curvature of Riemannian geometry [1, 2]: concomitantly the ontology of space and time becomes entangled with gravitation, and ‘reality’, as the observer invariant present, is obliterated. Standard geometrodynamic r...
